Plants of Nepal

This book is about the history of botanical explorations, plant collection, documentation and nomenclature of plant resources of Nepal form the early 19th century to the present. It encompasses comprehensive information on plant diversity, plant resources, enthobotany and flora of Nepal, especially the Gymnosperms( Cycadaceae- Taxaceae) and Angiosperms (Nymphaeaceae- Apiaceae) described from Nepal, representing all seven provinces and 77 districts of Nepal, and from a wide elevational range: as low as 60 m Jhapa) to 6400m (base of the Mount Everest, Solukhumbhu), East Nepal. the arrangement of families in the book is based on the APG system of classification, while the genera and species are arranged in alphabetical order.

Emphasis is given to three categories of plants: extended checklist of native and naturalized species; synoptic checklist of uncertain species ( Lacking sufficient information on its occurrence in Nepal): and synoptic checklist of exotic species (planted or cultivated species) documented from Nepal. an attempt has been made to provide the latest nomenclature of the species, with synonyms, local names and English names, life form or habit; distribution in Nepal, elevational ranges, and global distribution. in addition, information on endemic plants, threatened plants, naturalized and invasive species of Nepal: use- value of the majority of species reported from Nepal, are also provided. this book should be useful to a wide range of readers, from students, teachers and researchers in the fields of botany, forestry, agriculture, and floriculture, to policy-makers and all who are interested in the plants of Nepal

Synopsis

The present book ‘Plants of Nepal (Gymnosperms and angiosperms0\ id primarily based on ‘An Enumeration of the Flowering Plants of Nepal Vols. 1-3 ( Hara et al. 1979, hara 7 Williams 1979, Hara et al. 1982), ‘Annotated Checklist of Flowering Plants of Nepal\ (Press et al. 2000). and ‘Handbook of Flowering Plants of Nepal Vol. ‘ (Shrestha et. al. 2018). An attempt has been made to provide updated information on the phanerogams (seed plants) of Nepal, based on Published literature and herbarium specimens deposited in national and international herbaria. Fort-eight illustrative photo plate plates are provided, consisting of 179 plant photographs and 34 herbarium specimen Photographs, representing each family of gymnosperms and angiosperms recorded from Nepal.

Indigenous gymnosperms comprise 26 taxa (24 species, 2 intraspecies), belonging to 13 genera and 7 families; and indigenous angiosperms, including naturalized species, comprise 200 families, 1541 genera, and 5,820 lower taxa (5,606 species, and 214 infraspecies). In addition. 240 species and 26 infraspecies, belonging to 177 genera and 66 families, are treated as being of uncertain status (due to lack of supporting evidence on occurrence in Nepal); and exotic species (planted or cultivated0 comprise 572 taxa 9 559 (species and 13 infraspecies). belonging to 119 families and 401 genera.

Nepal harbors 302 species and 49 infraspecific taxa of endemic flowering plants belonging to 154 genera and 53 families. recent data on the IUCN Red List of threatened Plants in Nepal, as [resented in this book, show 24 species if gymnosperms and angiosperms as threatened. Similarly, the updated CITES-listed plants found in Nepal comprise 135 species (Appendix I: 1 species, appendix II: 130 species, and Appendix III: 4 species) of vascular plants. so far, 227 species of naturalized plants have been reported in Nepal, of which 28 species are problematic invasive alien plant species, mostly originating from South America. attempts have been made to provide use-value of the majority of the species, for example, medicinal plants (2,069 species)_, edible plants (770 species), fodder/forage crops (442 species). ornamental plants (>300 species), and fiber yielding plants (88 species).
